Building Block Award

Honors a picture book voted most popular by preschool children in Missouri's public libraries.

The Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award, administered by the Youth Services Community of Interest of MLA, is presented annually to the author and illustrator of the picture book voted most popular by preschool children in Missouri's public libraries. Designed to encourage reading aloud to children from birth through kindergarten age, the award was first given in 1996. Parents and other caregivers are encouraged to read aloud to children from a list of ten titles selected annually by a group of Missouri children's librarians. Colorful posters, bookmarks, activity sheets, and a manual of great ideas add to the fun.

Honors a picture book voted most popular by children grades 1-3 in Missouri's public schools.

The purpose of the Show Me Readers Award is to promote literature, literacy, and reading in Missouri elementary schools for grades one through three and to promote recognition of authors and illustrators of books that are favorites of Missouri children in these grades.

Annually honors a chapter book voted most popular by children grades 6-8 in Missouri's public schools.
2009-2012 Master List of Winners and Nominees

The Truman Readers Award encourages students in the early teen years to express their unique voice through exploring new literary genres, communicating with their peers about young adult literature, and honoring authors writing for young teens.


Gateway Readers Award

Annually honors three books voted most popular by teens grades 9-12 in missouri's public schools.

Because reading is the gateway to knowledge and lifelong learning, because the teen years are the gateway to adulthood, and because Missouri was the Gateway to the West, the Gateway Readers Award is for authors of books chosen by high school students in Missouri.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in the United States in English during the preceding year. The award is named in honor of Robert F. Sibert, the long-time President of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois. ALSC administers the award.

Geisel Award

Annually honors the most distinguished American book for beginning readers.

2006-2012 Winners & Honors  

The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year. The winner(s) are recognized for their literary and artistic achievements that demonstrate creativity and imagination to engage children in reading.The award is named for the world-renowned children’s author, Theodor Geisel a.k.a. Dr. Seuss.

Wilder Medal

Biennially honors an author that has made a substantial and lasting contribution over the years to American literature for children.
1954-2011 Winners & Honors  

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award was first given to its namesake in 1954. It honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. Between 1960 and 1980, the Wilder Award was given every five years. From 1980 to 2001, it was awarded every three years. Beginning in 2001, it has been awarded every two years.

Odyssey Award

Odyssey Award

Annually honors the best audiobook produced for children. 
2008-2012 Winners & Honors  

This annual award is given to the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States. The poems comprising Homer's "The Odyssey" were originally told and retold in the oral tradition, hence the name for this award. The Odyssey Award allows us to return to the ancient roots of storytelling, while living in our modern world.

Batchelder Award

Batchelder Award

Annually honors the most outstanding book for children Translated into English from another language.
1968-2012 Winners & Honors  

This award honors Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children, a believer in the importance of good books for children in translation from all parts of the world.The Batchelder Award is given to the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States.
