About the Library

The Daviess County Library was established as a county library by the voters in the spring of 1947. The residents of Daviess County voted a tax levy of 10 cents per $100 of the assessed value. In 1992, the residents voted an increase to 20 cents per $100 of the assessed value. Currently the tax levy is .1982 cents, due to reassessment.

In September of 1947, services began in the Van Dyke Building on North Main, in Gallatin. The library moved to 215 North Main in August of 1954. We have been at our current location of 306 W. Grand for the past nine years.

The library has a collection of 32,681 books, magazines and audio/visual media. 3,596 registered borrowers checked out 47,090 items during 2003 and approximately 50,000 items in 2004.

Public library districts are supported largely by property tax revenue and state funds. According to the Missouri Public Library Standards Committee, "in order to provide local funding for public libraries, the district tax rate should be increased if the existing levy proves inadequate."

The library staff and board take this opportunity to say "Thanks!" for your ongoing support.
